A drought does not ruin a horse field. It lifts the cover off one that was already failing, and it does that in a particular order. The bare patches that have appeared this summer are the last step in that order, not the first.
The mare was standing in the only shade in the field, on ground she had long since stood the grass off.
Sixteen, a sensible sort, in light work and doing a couple of tests a season. I had gone out because she had come through the summer stiff behind and short on the right rein, and her owner wanted to know whether that was simply age arriving.
What I noticed on the way in was the ground. The strip three or four paces from the gate was pale, smooth and shining slightly in the sun, and it had not carried grass in years. Beyond it the field was burnt off across the middle, holding a little green in the hollow where the water sits in winter, and ringed with docks around the trough.
I could work on the mare, and I did. But a fair amount of what I was being asked to sort out had been decided outside, on ground she had no say in.
I am not a land specialist. I read bodies. What I have is a long run of autumns treating horses that came in stiff after a winter standing in mud, and Septembers hearing about sore feet a fortnight after the rain arrived. Enough of them to be sure that much of what turns up in my hands was set in motion out in the field months earlier, which is what sent me looking for people who understand the ground itself.
It matters more than usual this year, with owners feeding hay in August that they had budgeted for December. The Animalweb 2026 survey put the average small bale at £6.85, with plenty reporting £8 to £12 locally and round bales going over £70.
The mare's owner said what most people say, which is that it will come back when it rains. She had reseeded two autumns before, had one promising flush of green the following spring, and by the next summer the field looked exactly as it had before.
That is the part worth attention. Not the bare ground, which everyone can see, but the fact that the money spent fixing it made almost no difference.
The grass is the read-out, not the mechanism.
A grass plant under water stress does something quite deliberate. It stops investing in the part we can see.
Leaf growth is expensive, so the plant shuts it down and pulls its energy into the crown and the root, where it can sit and wait. That is why a field can look finished from the gate while the recovery is intact underneath it. Given rain, ground that will take that rain, and a few weeks without a horse on it, a surprising amount comes back on its own.
So the first question about a bare patch is not what to sow into it. It is whether anything is still alive under it, because the answer changes both what you do and what it costs.
What separates the areas that recover from the areas that never do is almost never the seed. It is how deep the roots could go in the years before the drought arrived.
A horse is a heavy animal standing on four small, hard feet, and the pressure that puts through the top few inches of soil is considerable. Over a summer, and then another, the soil where horses spend most of their time gets pressed tight. The spaces that hold air and water close up, and the structure a root needs in order to travel downwards disappears.
This is never spread evenly, which is why the pattern is so recognisable. The gateway. The ring around the trough. The line along the fence they walk when they are calling to the horses next door. The shelter, the shade, the corner they stand in when the flies are bad.
A root cannot push through compacted ground, so the plants there are shallow rooted whether the summer is wet or dry. In a wet year they get away with it, because the water sits in the top two inches where their roots already are. In a dry year the moisture retreats deeper, the roots cannot follow, and the plant has nothing to fall back on.
The drought did not cause that. It asked the field a question it had never been asked before, and the weak areas answered honestly.
A paddock does not fail because the grass died. It fails because the ground stopped letting water in.
Which is also why reseeding so often disappoints. Seed sown onto compacted ground germinates happily in the top inch, looks for a season as though it has solved the problem, then meets the same pan of pressed soil its predecessors met and stops. It burns off in the next dry spell, in exactly the same places.
The effort was real and the money was real, and the outcome matched neither, because the work was aimed at the last link in the chain rather than the one that had broken.
And there is a consequence that matters more in six months than it does now. Compacted ground will not take water in. When the rain arrives, and it will arrive in quantity, it runs across the surface instead of soaking through, and it sits. The bare patch in August and the mud in November are the same problem in two kinds of weather.
Grass that has been drought stressed and then rained on does not come back gently. It comes back fast and sugary, because the plant has been sitting on stored reserves and suddenly has water to spend them with. Autumn grass after a dry summer is one of the more reliable ways to give a horse sore feet, and it arrives at exactly the moment everyone is relieved to see green again.
Before that there is the forage change. A horse eating hay in August because the field has nothing in it, then turned back out onto a flush of new growth in September, has had two abrupt changes in six weeks, and the gut is what pays for them.
Then the winter. Ground that will not drain is ground the horses stand in, and a horse that spends December on wet, poached ground moves less, stands more, and comes into spring stiffer than it went into winter. I see those horses every February. The owner usually describes it as the horse having aged over the winter. Often it simply stopped moving for three months.
The field is not a separate subject from the horse. It is where the horse spends most of its life.
Two fields on the same yard, side by side off the same track, same soil, same rainfall.
The first was the everyday turnout. Horses on it most of the year, gate in the bottom corner, trough four paces inside that gate because that was where the pipe came in. The second was the spare field, shut up for hay in June and grazed for a few weeks in the autumn.
By the middle of August both looked beaten, and the owner assumed she would have to reseed the pair of them.
The screwdriver said otherwise. In the spare field it pushed in almost to the handle. In the everyday field it went in easily enough in the middle, and in the strip between the gate and the trough it stopped dead after an inch, on ground you could have parked a car on.
She reseeded neither, which saved her the largest bill on the table. She did pay to have the compacted strip aerated, which was not free but was a fraction of seeding two fields. Then she kept the horses off the everyday field for six weeks once the rain came, and moved the trough to the middle of the fence line so they had to walk to it.
By the following spring the spare field had come back on its own, thick, with no seed at all. The everyday field came back everywhere except the old gateway strip, which is still thin, but it stopped spreading, and for the first winter in years there was no standing water around the trough.
The difference between those two fields was never the grass. One got rested and the other got walked on, and the drought made that visible.
The useful work in the next few weeks is diagnostic, and most of it costs nothing.
Take a screwdriver out to the field. Push it into the ground in the middle where the grass has held on best, and note how far it goes before it stops. Then do the same three paces inside the gateway, and again beside the trough. If it slides in easily in one place and stops dead after an inch in another, that difference is the reason one area recovers and the other does not, and it tells you where any money should go.
Look at what is growing in the bare ground rather than at the bare ground itself. Docks, thistles and dandelions are not arriving at random. They are the plants that can make a living where grass cannot, and where they sit is a fairly accurate map of where the soil is struggling.
Then wait for the first proper rain and watch where the water goes. Ground that takes it in is ground with a future. Ground that holds it on the surface in sheets is telling you which areas will be your mud, and giving you weeks of warning.
None of that requires becoming a soil scientist. It requires walking your own fields with a different question in mind.
Not what will make this green again.
