When the Experts are Stuck: The Case of the Invisible Brace

“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” — Wayne Dyer

Three months ago, I was standing in an arena with a vet and another physio, looking at a talented show jumper. She was consistently showing lameness on her right foreleg, but on paper, she was perfectly healthy.

We had used every diagnostic tool available—nerve blocks, flexion tests, ultrasounds, and x-rays. Everything was clear. The vet was at a loss. The physio was stuck.

I reminded myself of a basic principle: Horses don’t just decide to show lameness. There is always a reason, even if it isn't showing up on a scan. To find it, I had to change the way I was looking.

The 5-Day Observation

I asked the rider if I could come up every day for five days just to observe. No treatments, no adjustments—just watching the mare’s natural patterns.

By day three, I noticed a subtle but consistent pattern. Whenever the tack was presented, before it even touched her back, the mare would hold her breath. Her entire ribcage would brace in anticipation.

The tack fit perfectly. Her digestive health had been cleared. She wasn't "broken"; she was anxious. That internal brace was creating a physical restriction that looked exactly like a right-fore lameness.

From Pathology to Partnership

Instead of more clinical tests, we implemented a relaxation protocol. We stopped trying to "fix the leg" and started working with her nervous system. I asked the rider to use this protocol consistently before and during exercise.

Six weeks later, I got the call: “She isn’t lame anymore!”

The change in the mare was total. She wasn't just sound; she was moving with a freedom she hadn't shown in months. She finally felt understood.

Why the "Small" Signs Matter

Progress with our horses doesn't always require more force or more complex medical interventions. Often, it requires the willingness to look at behavior as information rather than an insult or a medical mystery.

When you learn to listen to the subtle language of the nervous system—the signals that happen long before a horse shows physical lameness—the "problems" often resolve themselves.
